Billy is the most compelling form runner in this maiden hurdle. He ran a strong second at Te Aroha over 3100m on heavy ground, which reads well against this field. He's lightly raced and improving, drawn ideally in gate 5, and gets the services of Kylan Wiles who knows the stable. The only doubts are his lack of a win on soft ground, but his heavy track form is excellent and the surface is drying. He should settle handy and can take beating.

Comedy brings genuine class to this maiden hurdle with four career wins and placings in Open company. He's adept on soft and heavy tracks, which is a major tick on a Soft7 surface. His only hurdle run was moderate, but he has the scope to improve with that experience. Hamish Mc Neill retains the ride and the stable is in consistent form.
Swingit Our Way is a seasoned mare dropping dramatically from BM75 grade into a maiden hurdle. She handles wet ground well and has been competitive at much higher levels. The obvious concern is her lack of jumps experience – she's never contested a hurdle race. However, her class and fitness may compensate if she takes to jumping naturally.
Captains Run is a seasoned jumper with a steeplechase win and multiple placings at stakes level. His recent flat run was poor but he was first up after a long spell and should strip fitter. He drops significantly in class and has the best jumps credentials in the race. The wide gate is a concern on this turning track, but his ability to overcome it with tactical speed could see him feature.

Paewai Mullins Shearing Mdn Hrdl
Carignan boasts the best jumps credentials in this maiden hurdle field, with two thirds from two starts over obstacles. He has been racing consistently, placing in his last two hurdle outings on heavy ground. From barrier 6, he can settle midfield and should handle the Soft 7 conditions. While his flat record is modest, his jumping ability gives him a clear edge over first-time hurdlers.
Overdraft brings strong flat credentials to his hurdling debut, including a win at Woodville and a Group 2 placing behind him. He has the stamina to handle 3000m and has raced on heavy tracks successfully. The major query is whether he takes to jumping, but if he does, his class should heavily outweigh the opposition. A definite place chance and possible winner if jumping cleanly.
He has a soft track win and gets a good barrier to settle handy. The transition to hurdles is a massive unknown, and his recent flat runs are lacklustre. However, if he adapts quickly, he could outclass these. More a place chance than a win selection given the jumping queries.
Heza Warrior is an improving 4-year-old who recorded his best hurdles result last start, finishing 3rd at Te Aroha over 3100m on heavy ground. He has had three jumps runs and is trending the right way. From barrier 4, he can settle handy and should appreciate the extended trip. Likely to run into the placings again.

Dictation boasts the best hurdle strike rate in the field with 5 wins from 10 jumps starts, including a track-and-distance win at Woodville. He ran a solid 3rd behind a clear winner last time on Soft 7, suggesting he handles the surface adequately despite no soft win. With a sharp jockey and proven class, he represents strong winning chance at each-way value.
He has placed in all four hurdle runs since his maiden win, including a second at Riccarton. The Woodville 3000m win is a strong plus. While he lacks a recent hurdle victory, his pattern suggests he's close and the lower weight aids his cause.
The Bambino is a genuine Woodville specialist with two wins over the exact course and distance, both with Emily Farr aboard. He's drawn ideally in barrier 2 and should settle handy. While his last start was moderate, he often produces his best here.
Taika often runs well without winning, but his soft-track credentials are the best in the race with two wins and five placings. He was runner-up to a strong winner last time over 3200m, matching the top picks. Each-way appeal is genuine.

The Republican is the standout based on recent flat form, having run second at New Plymouth (2000m, Heavy10) before a hurdle fall. He drops back to a Maiden and maps well from barrier 3 on this tight track. While his soft-track record is poor, his heavy-track prowess suggests he'll handle Soft7. The main query is consistency, but he's clearly the one to beat.
He's lightly raced and should strip fitter for that run. From barrier 6 he can settle midfield and be in the finish. The main question is whether he can improve enough to win, but he represents solid place value and is the second pick.
Popinjay is hard to make a strong case for based on his record (0-1-1 from 9 starts). He ran a moderate 8th at Waverley last time and faces a tricky wide gate. His only placing came on good ground, and today's Soft7 is a query.
Wind Talker has been building form on the synthetic, running second last start over 2140m. She steps onto turf for the first time on a Soft7, which is a query. However, she gets a weight pull and starts from a decent barrier. She is the value runner in an open maiden.

Never Look Back boasts the strongest recent form in the race, winning two of his last three starts and placing second in the other. He has run well over 4900m, which negates any distance query, and his jockey/trainer combination has produced results.
Lord Spencer is an improving jumper who scored a dominant win over 3500m last time. His partnership with Lemmy Douglas is a major plus, and he has shown the ability to win at Woodville. The main concern is the 4800m trip and wide draw, but his recent momentum suggests he can handle the step up.
Smug is the only runner with a Woodville 4800m win on his resume, making him a proven commodity at the distance and venue. He ran a creditable 3rd on Soft 7 last time and draws well.
Prince Turbo is an 11-year-old who has been around the mark at this course and distance, finishing 2nd in the same race last year. He draws the inside gate which is a major asset on Woodville's turning track.

She drops in class and carries the minimum weight.
Zac Flash is a consistent type who has placed in maiden steeplechases before and now drops from Steeple grade. Barrier 4 allows a handy midfield position. He represents a solid place chance as well.
Keepz Occurring is a gamble based on his only career win coming at Woodville (over hurdles). He drops in class and has a favourable inside barrier. The jockey combination has produced a win before, but his recent flat/jumps form has been poor.
Sir Maverick catches the eye with the inside barrier on a track that heavily favours handy runners. He drops to the easiest class he's faced and has shown ability in maiden hurdles. A speculative inclusion.

Woodville Service Centre Hwt Hcp (66)
Valley King is the most compelling runner on form, with a strong heavy track record and a second-up pattern that suggests peak performance. He's won at 1600m and has solid Australian form. The barrier is workable and the jockey is in good touch. The main concern is a modest first-up run, but he tends to improve second-up.
The Finnster ran an encouraging third at Woodville last start over track and distance on a heavy track. He's drawn well (3) and should lead or sit handy in a slow-run race. His heavy form is solid. The big negative is the absence of a jockey at this point, which introduces risk. If a capable jockey is booked, he's a strong place chance and could win if the tempo suits.
Arksey drops sharply in class from BM75 to R66, which makes him very competitive on paper. He's drawn the inside and can settle handily. However, his soft track record is a concern—he's yet to place on soft ground, and today's Soft7 may not suit. He's also topweighted at 70kg. Place appeal is strong, win is risky.
Pinkerton has a phenomenal record at Woodville with three wins and a placing from five starts, and at the distance he's 2 wins and a second. He's clearly a course specialist. The wide draw (11) is a concern on this tight circuit, and his recent form hasn't been consistent.

Bak De Ace is the most consistent maiden in the field with three placings from five starts. He hasn't raced since April but his prior form over 1400-1650m is strong, including a close 2nd and 3rd on Good. First-up record shows two placings from two attempts. Barrier 2 gives him every chance to settle midfield and be handy turning for home on this tight circuit. Likely to be in the finish.
Tor Ment Tor comes off a solid third at Woodville on Heavy 10, beating a similar field. He has been racing in tougher company (BM65, Open) and now drops to a Maiden. His best runs have come on rain-affected ground, and Soft should be fine. The wide draw requires some luck but if he can slot in midfield, his recent form suggests he can feature. A place chance at least.
Early Times was in good form last winter, placing twice over 2100m-2200m on wet tracks. He resumes over 1600m which is short of his best but second-up he should strip fitter. His Woodville run when second on Heavy shows he handles the track. If he can settle midfield from barrier 9, his stamina could be an asset in the run home. Place claims.
He ran a credible 5th at Woodville two starts back in a Rest. 60, beaten 6 lengths. He now drops to a Maiden and gets the services of in-form jockey Mathew Gillies who strikes at 25% recently. The stable combination of Nelson & McDougal with Gillies has a good record. Barrier 4 is ideal for a prominent run.
