She has since won a jump out and draws ideally in gate five, able to settle just off what shapes as a hot early tempo. Strong stable-jockey combination and the one to beat.

Placed over this trip at Pakenham on good ground, settling second and fighting on to be beaten half a length. Draws nicely in seven and maps to sit third behind a hot tempo, which is the ideal spot over Ballarat's 1000m, though the stable's recent record tempers confidence.
Sydney filly with black-type form dropping sharply in grade. She led and was beaten half a length in a Warwick Farm maiden two starts back, then never got going in a Group race on soft ground she clearly disliked. Has the speed to be handy from gate 12, which is not a heavy penalty at Ballarat's 1000m.
Won a jump out since and drops sharply in grade.

Placed behind smart company in South Australia and her Donald effort over 1200m was a winning-standard run from midfield. Drawn the rail with a capable rider, she maps to sit just off what should be a hot tempo and charge home. Hardest to beat.
A filly who took on a Caulfield two-year-old handicap and was far from disgraced — the best single run in this field. Now with a leading stable and a smart rider, she drops sharply in grade and should be in the firing line from gate six. The concern is the hot early tempo with rivals sharing her speed; if she sits just off it she wins, if pressed she may be vulnerable late.
The class runner of the field, a filly who has competed in stakes and Flemington events and drops to a maiden with only 52.5kg. Drawn to lead from gate three and primed off a narrow Sandown second, she has the talent to win this. The knock is the race shape: several rivals share her speed, so a fast tempo could cook her late.
A lightly raced filly who showed plenty on debut, coming from last at Pakenham to run to a winning standard. Second-up with natural improvement, she is ideally suited by what shapes as a genuinely fast tempo and draws to get a soft run off the pace before charging late.

The clear form pick. Sits handy with genuine early speed. Concerns are a wider draw, a first look at good ground after three heavy-track runs, and a stable yet to win here, but the ability is obvious.
Twice placed at maiden level and his Seymour second, closing hard from last over 1300m on a good track, rates strongly. Drawn sweetly in six to settle third and gets a senior rider. The main query is the drop back to 1200m, a trip he has not tried, but his profile and map fit this race well.
Second-up and building, he was beaten just over a length in a stronger maiden last time after being hampered late. Draws midfield and maps to sit fourth; stable is going well. Needs to sharpen slightly at 1200m but is a genuine contender.
Honest 14-start maiden with three seconds, including a nose defeat last start over 1300m. Closes strongly, and a genuinely fast tempo up front could bring him into it late. Yet to place on good ground and deep closers have struggled at Ballarat, so he is a value play rather than a banker.

Knucklehead is the one runner proven over the staying trip, working home strongly for third over 2000m last start in a performance that stacked up to winning standard. Alexander and Stockdale are a high-percentage local combination, and the inside draw should see him parked just off a hot tempo. Still a maiden, but the step to this trip and the fast early pace look tailor-made.
Doublet brings the best recent closing effort in the race, storming home for second last start and finishing hard. He is rock-consistent without winning, which is the knock for a stable enduring a frustrating run. With three likely front-runners cutting at each other, his sit-and-sprint style is well suited, and he has already placed at this distance.
In a race that shapes for stronger finishers she looks short enough.
She closed strongly for third at Ballarat Synthetic last start and appears to be on the improve at the right time.

Manhari (Bm66)
Ahab has been the model of consistency, finishing in the placings at each of his last three starts and running up to the mark when second in a stronger race last time. He settles on the pace, draws ideally in gate six and is proven over this trip, a profile that fits a moderate-tempo Ballarat staying test.
Her maiden win on a good track was the strongest single run in this field and she is lightly raced with plenty of upside. The query is tactical: she settles near last and will need luck from a wide gate over a trip she tackles for the first time.
A lightly raced, progressive four-year-old who has won two of five, both times dictating from the front. He ran well on the speed when third in a stronger race last start and the staying trip at Ballarat suits on-pace runners. All his best form, however, is on rain-affected ground and he has never raced beyond 1800m, so place claims look stronger than his winning chance.
An improving mare who won strongly last start, running right up to a winning standard while charging home from the back. The hot predicted tempo should play to her late surge and barrier two lets her save ground. The queries are a dry track — all her form is on softer going — and her habit of giving away a start at a venue that is tough on deep closers.
An improving stayer whose last-start win over 2050m, carrying 61.5kg, was an emphatic display. His trainer is going at 40 per cent and the horse has already run a competitive race over this course and distance on a good surface.

Vale Paddy Payne Snr (Bm62)
Proven at this track and trip in this grade - he ran second over the Ballarat 1000m in a Bm62 earlier in the year and comes off a closing second at Ballarat. Drawn perfectly in five with the speed to sit just off a hot early duel between two wide-drawn leaders, and the stable's record with this rider is a strong pointer. Two wins from 16 is the query, but this shapes as his best chance yet.
The query is the leap from a synthetic maiden to a Bm62 on turf at just his second start, with modest stable and rider strike rates behind him.
Bella Cinque is a reliable 1000m performer who was a close second last start on soft ground after leading. She is consistent and will be in the firing line at the 400m, which is the single most reliable angle on this surface.
Won over 1000m at Echuca last start, settling midfield and finishing over the top of them. The stable is the hottest in this race, he's drawn well in six and he's a lightly raced four-year-old with upside at the trip.

Hygain Edge (Bm62)
Proven at this level last prep with placings in stronger 66-grade sprints, and he gets the perfect set-up here: barrier four, early speed to hold a handy spot and a 3kg claim bringing him in light. Ballarat rewards on-pace runners and a lone leader means a moderate tempo.
He is a young improver from a stable that knows this track. The concerns are real, though: a big jump from maiden company and a horror draw in 16, which usually means working early to find a position.
She settles handily, which suits a track that favours those on the speed, and she is consistent. The obvious query is the step back to 1200m, as her best form is all around 1400-1500m, and she returns off an autumn campaign. Still, on class alone she is a genuine top-three hope.
The one to beat. Won at this grade on soft ground last start, charging home from well back, and ran to a winning standard at Wangaratta before that. Progressive four-year-old with the right draw and a rider who has already won on him. Handles wet ground and is adaptable, which suits the hot tempo expected.
Everything points to a horse who saves his best for a fresh run, as both career wins have come first-up. He has won in stronger company than this and his stable-and-jockey combination is going well. The negatives are the long break between races, the fact he has never won at 1200m and a get-back pattern that is not ideal here.

Al Duca looks the one to beat. He jumps fast and from barrier 1 should control a race with only one other on-pacer, and Ballarat's mile is a strong on-pace track. He has won 8 of 23 and is well suited at 1600m and on good ground. Back in this grade, he is the horse to run down.
He has never won in 13 good-track starts and was unplaced in his only 1600m run. From barrier 18 on a track that punishes wide draws, he'll need luck.
Craig is a get-back stayer with an excellent record on good ground and at 1600m. The query is the map: from barrier 13 he'll be near last in a race where Ballarat strongly favours on-pace runners. If the leaders overdo it, his late turn of foot makes him dangerous.
A reliable on-pace galloper who saves his best for the mile, with three wins and six seconds from thirteen starts at the trip. He is likely to lead, and front-runners have a clear edge over this course and distance. The worry is the very wide gate and a trainer without a recent winner, so a place return is the sensible play.
He races well on good ground and has a stack of experience.

Ule Hoof Oil (Bm62)
The class runner of the field. She was outclassed in a stronger city mares' race last time but won well two starts back and is far better placed against her own sex here. She handles a firm track and has the speed to take up a handy position, and this field lacks depth. Top weight and an untried 1500m are the queries, but she's the one to beat.
She maps as the likely leader from a handy gate and drops out of stronger company, and at Ballarat that on-pace profile counts for plenty. She's been consistently in the placings recently and the moderate tempo should let her dictate the race. The concern is that her better form is on wet ground and she has only two wins to her name, so she's more a place than a win proposition.
An improving, lightly raced filly who won at this trip before running a close second in a much stronger Flemington race over further — that reads well for a BM62. Her trainer is strong at Ballarat.
A stakes-placed filly who has been pitched in the deep end at her last two starts and drops right back to her own grade here. Her staying breeding says the step to 1500m will suit and she has a senior jockey aboard. The query is her get-back style at a track that favours on-pace runners, plus the stable's quiet form, hence an each-way play.
