Townsville specialist who has won two and placed in three of five starts here, including a win over this trip. Won his latest in good style on the speed and should settle handy from gate two in a race likely to be run at a gentle tempo. He has place form on soft ground but is yet to win on it, and he rises to Open company with top weight. Still the most reliable profile in the race.

Mitavite Hcp
The only natural leader in the field and likely to get an uncontested lead in what shapes as a slowly-run sprint, which suits his forward style. Won his maiden last start leading throughout and his stable has an excellent record at this track. Steps up sharply in grade, has never raced beyond 1100m or on a soft track, so there is some risk, but the map is firmly in his favour.
Unbeaten in one start, a strong maiden win over this course and distance where he came from off the pace with a big closing burst despite racing keenly. Clearly has ability. However, he jumps straight into Open company, has never raced on a soft track and is a get-back runner in a race that may be run at a slow tempo, so he will need luck from off the pace.
Won first-up this preparation at Cairns and is a second-up winner in the past. He handles soft ground well, with a win and a placing from three tries, which matters on today's surface. Draws a favourable middle gate and maps to sit handy.

Caroma Mdn Plate
The most reliable horse in this maiden. He has placed in three of his last four, including a narrow second here over 1400m, and he settles in the first few in a race lacking genuine early speed. Top local jockey Ryan Wiggins takes the ride and the horse races well at Townsville. He has had his chances to break through, but this is his best setup and he is hard to beat if he runs up to recent form.
A closer who has hit the line well at his past two starts, including a nose second at Cairns and a close third here, both behind decent maidens. The inside gate helps him save ground and Ashley Butler is riding in good touch at this track. His soft-track form is a query and he will need the race to be run to suit, but he is one of the few with genuine recent form to bring into a weak maiden.
An improving stayer who ran second over a similar trip last start, beaten only half a length, and whose closing sections were the best in this field. He saves two kilos through the claim and looks suited by the step to the mile. The concern is his racing style: he concedes a start and has to weave through, and he has no wet-track placing to point to. Still, on ability and recent form he is right in this.
The likely leader and the one who can control this from the front, which carries extra value at Townsville where forward runners are favoured. He is improving, having placed over the mile last start, and there is not much other early speed to pressure him. The knock is that he fades late and has to work from a wide gate, so he is a speculative each-way play rather than a safe one.

Jo Hassett - 2026 TTC Errol Sewell Award Hcp (55)
Last-start maiden winner who did it the tough way over this track and trip on soft ground, settling back and running on strongly. Draws the inside gate, which suits a Townsville 1000m sprint, and the Button/Kennedy combination is firing. The rise out of maiden grade is the query, but the race is a low-grade one and her winning effort was the strongest last-start run in this field.
Genuine on-pacer who maps to lead or sit outside the other speed horse, which is where you want to be in a Townsville 1000m. Drops in grade and two starts back ran a narrow second over this trip here. The concern is a modest record on rain-affected going and a slightly awkward draw, but the stable is only lightly represented and he should give a sight.
Soft-track specialist who has placed repeatedly on rain-affected ground and is proven at 1000m, including a win here. He settles well back, so the predicted fast tempo up front is a plus for his sweeping finish.
Nicely drawn mare who settles just off the speed, gets in very light with the claim, and has run to a smart standard on soft ground in a stronger race than this. She has been racing in tougher company up north and not been disgraced.

Mind Over Matter - 2026 TTC Horse Of The Year Hcp
The class runner of the field and a genuine Townsville specialist with eight wins from fourteen starts here and three from five over this trip. Soft ground holds no fears. The one real query is the top weight of 62.5kg after recent wins at much lighter imposts.
Consistent front-runner who has placed in four of his last five at Open level, including a win and a second over this trip at Townsville. He'll roll forward from a good middle draw and a moderate tempo helps him control the race, and he handles soft ground.
Improving galloper who won last start over 1400 and is well treated at 54kg. He races midfield, which suits a soft track that has favoured on-pace and forward types, and his jockey-trainer combination is firing. The step from Bm72 company into Open grade is the obvious question, and he's yet to win on a rain-affected track despite three soft-ground placings.
Last-start winner over 1200 at this track on soft ground and a proven performer here over this trip. The top jockey rides the track at a healthy strike rate and the horse has the formlines to be competitive at this level. The concern is his get-back style on a course that favours on-pace runners, plus an inside draw that may not suit a backmarker.

Lysaght Plate (C1)
Dark Fae has yet to win at 1400m or on soft and folded here last start, so she must rate herself better.
She's A Sweet Star has the best wet-track profile in the field, with a win and two placings from six soft-track starts, and a strong 7:1-2-1 record at Townsville. She gets in-form hoop Ben Kennedy, who rides this track at 28%, and comes from a stable with a 20% strike rate. She was only fair last start and tends to settle off the speed, so she needs the race run to suit, but she is a genuine contender.
Okay Zoomer is the value runner. He boasts a 5:1-2-0 record at Townsville over 1400m and won over this trip last start, and he races on the pace, which the track favours. He also ran one of the better races of his career at this track and trip on soft ground.
She is a soft-track winner and ran a strong fourth in a Class 1 over 1400m on a rain-affected track last summer, and she has had a recent trial to top her off. Her overall record is poor and she has never won or placed at Townsville, so she is a speculative each-way play rather than a win proposition.

Ladbrokes (Bm60)
In-form mare who won at Townsville last start over the short course and was a desperately close fourth before that. Drawn the inside gate, she settles handy and gets the run of the race on a deck that clearly favours those up on the speed. She steps up a grade but her recent form is the best in the field and the map is made for her.
She ran a close third at this track and 1200m two runs back and gets the services of the best jockey at the meeting.
Consistent galloper with the best track-and-distance credentials in the field, having won three and placed in two more of his six starts over 1200m. His recent runs have been at shorter trips but the form lines hold up to a winning standard and he maps to settle handy.
Thrown in on class after competing in much stronger races, and she is the horse most likely to take up the running from a handy barrier. Her soft-track record is respectable and she has produced a winning-standard effort at Townsville in the wet.

Rinnai (Bm55)
Vouchers is the pick. He races on the speed and from a good middle draw in a race that shapes slowly run, he should get the perfect trail behind the likely leader. Lately he has mixed it in stronger company and ran a sound second over 1400m here two starts back. He drops a touch in grade, has the leading local rider up and maps best of the on-pace division. The knocks are the step to the mile and an ordinary soft-track record, but he is the one to beat.
She is consistent and race-fit, and the stable can get them ready. But she rises sharply from maiden grade and, more importantly, draws gate 16 at the mile, the worst possible alley at Townsville, where wide barriers are all but shut out. She has never raced beyond 1400m and meets hardened older horses. A place chance at best.
Convo drops a long way in grade after racing in much stronger company at Cairns and Mackay, and that is the key. She has a win and a placing on rain-affected ground, is drawn to get an economical run just off the speed, and is ridden by the track's most successful rider for a stable that wins regularly here. The concern is that she rarely salutes, with just one win from 21 starts, so she is best played each-way.
Twin Turbo is the value. He drops out of better races and was far from disgraced last start at this track and trip on a soft track, closing late into a stronger field. He has a good draw and handles the ground. The negatives are obvious: he gets back in a race that suits the speed, and he carries much more weight this time.

Samios Hcp (C5)
He is the clear on-pace runner in a race without much early speed, and the map suits him perfectly from gate six. He led throughout to win his latest start, handles soft ground, and his trainer has a strong record here. Lightly raced, he has scope to keep improving and his second-up record reads well.
He won at this track last start in stronger company, running home strongly to get the verdict, and the in-form local jockey knows him well. He is always around the mark at Townsville and is drawn to get an ideal trailing position. The query is the drop back to 1000m, a trip he has never won over, and he will need the leaders to tire late.
He races forward and gets a lovely draw in gate four, which fits a track where on-speed runners hold a clear edge. He has been placed over this course and distance in open company and is generally reliable. He comes off a plain effort, though, and his overall 1000m record is modest, so he will need to be at his best early to be in the finish.
He is a genuine track-and-trip specialist, having won three times over this course and distance, and he is already a soft-track winner. His recent runs came over the wrong trip and from wide gates, so they can be forgiven. Worth an each-way ticket.
