The clear class runner of this maiden steeplechase. A seven-race winner who has contested much stronger jumping events, she was beaten only narrowly into second over this same course and distance last start and is well proven on rain-affected ground. Fresh and recently placed, she is suited by the staying test. The wide draw is a minor concern as she gets back, but her superiority should tell.

Dunstan Mdn Stpl
The model of consistency over the bigger fences, placing in each of his last four steeplechase starts including a solid second on a Soft 7 at Te Rapa. Still lightly raced as a six-year-old and clearly improving with experience. He gets back in the running but finishes off strongly. A safe placing proposition in what is an open maiden steeplechase.
He races handy from the inside gate, shows good late speed and ran second over hurdles two starts back. He has yet to place on soft ground, which tempers enthusiasm, but he maps ideally and rates a leading place hope.

AJRA Mdn Hrdl
Outovstock is the one to beat after a strong second over this exact course and distance at his only previous hurdle start. He settled handy and stayed on well, and the form has a solid look for a maiden hurdle on a soft track. The in-form Dean Parker takes the ride and the stable has him improving. The main query is barrier 12, which could force him to work to find the front in a slow-run staying test, but his class edge should see him go close.
Rosina is the most consistent mare in the field and looks well suited by this staying trip on a soft track. She closes strongly and the long Te Aroha straight plays to her strengths; she was a good fourth over this course and distance last start, running on from midfield. With two soft-track wins and a stack of placings to her name, she is a genuine each-way player who can be finishing over the top of them.
Billy is the safest jumper in the race and has been knocking on the door with three placings from six hurdle starts. He is consistent, handles wet ground and comes from a strong jumps stable, so another forward showing is likely. The knock is that he rarely wins, carrying top weight of 68kg after an unplaced run last time.
Sir Mikki brings by far the best flat class into this maiden hurdle with seven career wins, and he was a good second last start before a freshen-up. He has shown speed to lead in his jumps races and the track's tendency to reward in-form, fresh runners helps his case.

J Swap Great New Zealand Hrdl
Won over hurdles here last start in testing ground, sitting close to the speed. Strong record on soft tracks and a healthy strike rate over jumps. On-pace profile fits the likely slow tempo and the inside gate, and the compressed weight scale helps him carry 69kg. The one query is the step to 4200m, where he is yet to place, but his form and track/bias fit makes him the most likely winner and justifies his favouritism.
The model of consistency with four top-three finishes in his last five, including a second in the Grand National Hurdle at this trip and two seconds over 4200m. On-pace from a good gate and proven in heavy ground.
A classy veteran hurdler with five jump wins who finished third in the very race Squire won here, leading for much of it, and was fifth in the Grand National. Placed twice at this course and consistent at this level.
A track specialist with two hurdle wins and a second at Te Aroha, including a runner-up effort behind Squire last start.

He has won two of his last three, including a hurdle, and placed at this sort of grade on the flat at Hawera before that. He stays 2200m well and has already won at Te Aroha. The risks are a get-back style and a likely slow tempo, and his flat victories are thin, but he is the safest form anchor in an open field.
An in-form closer who was runner-up in a stronger grade last start and drops in class here. The major query is soft turf: no placings from 13 attempts, with his best form on the synthetic. Drawn to settle back, he needs the tempo to be genuine but is a sound place prospect if he handles the ground.
A grinding stayer who charged home for third in a stronger grade last start and now drops in class. He is fresh, drawn to settle midfield and has a strong wet-track placing record on heavy ground. He has never placed on soft going, which is the obvious concern on a Soft 7, but the course tends to reward fresh, recently-placed horses, so he rates a place chance.
A course-and-distance winner who has also won on soft ground and lands the inside draw in a race with little early speed, so he can lead or sit handy. He drops sharply in class.

Aroha Law Hwt Mdn
Queen Sansa brings the most dependable recent form into this open maiden. She has finished third at her last two starts, both on soft ground, the latest over 1600m where she closed strongly from off the pace. Returning to 1400m with several forward runners likely to fight for the lead should suit a mare who finishes well down Te Aroha's long straight. Her soft-track record is solid and she is race-fit and in form.
She was a game second in a stronger handicap on heavy ground two starts ago but was run down after leading last time out. The step up to 1400m is an unknown and her rider has had a lean run, but she has the early toe to be right in the finish if she can control her effort.
His lone appearance was a fifth over a shorter trip on heavy going, and stepping up in distance fresh should help. With so little exposed form this is a leap of faith based on stable intent and his favourable racing position.

Geoff Brindley Memorial Mdn
The most dependable wet-track profile in the race. A six-year-old who has finished in the placings four times on soft ground and won't mind the testing conditions. Fresh off a third, he is second-up today, a stage at which he has placed twice from four attempts. Drawn ideally in barrier two as the likely leader, he should control a moderate tempo over a trip that suits, and is the one they will have to run down.
She settles handy and tries hard, which fits the profile of recent winners here. The query is the mile: she has never raced beyond 1400m and her closing speed does not flatter.
An improving lightly raced maiden whose form is all on wet ground, and a Soft 7 plays to his strengths as a son of Raise The Flag. He ran third last start and has been edging closer, and barrier four should see him settle just off the speed. Solid each-way claims.
Third-up with upside, she is in the hands of a jockey with a good record at this track and with the stable.

New Zealand Horse Ambulance Trust Hwt (Bm65)
She shares favouritism and deserves it. She can settle handy from gate three on a track that rewards on-pace milers, she has already placed here at this trip, and she has won on a rain-affected surface. Second-up, she should be fitter than when a luckless tenth last time, and half her starts have produced a cheque. The knock is just one win from eight, but her map and going profile are the cleanest in the field.
The concern is the sharp rise from maiden grade, a first attempt at a mile and a first run on a soft surface, all carrying top weight. Second pick on the strength of his track win and freshness, but not a stand-out.
A consistent type at this level who has been finishing well lately, and she has placed here over this trip. Both her wins came on heavy ground, so a rain-affected surface should not bother her, but she has never won on a soft track in seven attempts and her Te Aroha record is bare. She tends to settle too far back, which makes her a place hope rather than a winning one from an awkward midfield draw.
Big each-way value. He was a respectable fifth at this course last start. The negatives are clear: a modest overall win record, no wins on soft ground and no wins here.
