The class runner of the field. She finished second in the WA Oaks on soft going and resumed with a fast-finishing third at Bunbury, beaten less than a length. Stepping to the mile second-up looks ideal, and she is the one they all have to beat. The query is the shorter trip and a midfield map in a race that leans to on-pace runners, but her ability should carry her home.

Avon Valley Toyota Mdn
The most reliable of the exposed horses. He has placed twice at this track and distance and keeps hitting the line, closing from well back for third over this course last start. Fitness is not an issue and he handles the mile. The knock is that he settles a long way off them, so on a track that favours handy runners he'll need the leaders to come back to him.
Pike goes aboard and this gelding should lead. His best effort came when he controlled the pace on soft ground and held on for second at Pinjarra. Dropping back to a mile suits a horse who tired over further last start. If he gets an easy lead at a moderate tempo he'll be hard to peg back, though there is a query on how much he finds when the challengers arrive.
The value play. She has the best closing speed in the field and caught the eye charging from last to finish seventh, beaten under three lengths, over 1300m here last start. She'll spot them a start, so she needs the tempo to be genuine early.

TABtouch Try Bet Loop Today Mdn
Firearm produced the standout performance in this field last start, storming from near last to be beaten a neck over this course and distance. He is second-up now, drops in class and looks set to peak. The wide gate and get-back style are the obvious worries on a track that rewards handy runners, but his closing speed can overcome it.
An unraced filly from a strong stable with William Pike in the saddle, a combination that wins at 37%. She trialled sharply, finishing a nose second, and draws the inside gate.
Improving gelding who ran home strongly for second at Belmont last start on the back of a plain debut. He steps to 1100m and drops back to maiden grade here. From a quieter gate he can settle handy and be charging late, though he does need the race to be run to suit his finish.
Lightly raced gelding who led and stuck on for third on debut, a run with more merit than it looked. He won a recent trial and his natural speed maps him right onto the pace, which is how Northam sprints are usually won.

Westwide Tracking Mdn
Clearly the class runner of the field. She drops out of city company into a plain Northam maiden. The wide gate and the likelihood of a fast early tempo are the concerns, but her form reads stronger than anything else engaged.
Second-up with the perfect draw and map — he lands in the first couple from gate two and should get the run of the race behind the speed. Champion jockey Chris Parnham takes the ride and combines strongly with this stable. He won a recent trial and showed enough on debut at Ascot to suggest he is the improving type in a wide-open maiden.
Pike's record at Northam is exceptional and he is the meeting's best rider.
Honest maiden who has twice finished second at this track and is suited by the drop into a plain affair.

Northam Liquor Barons Mdn
An unraced filly from a yard that places them well, with the leading rider booked. The obvious query is the first race start from a wide gate in a big field, and she must prove she runs out the 1300m fresh, but her connections give her the strongest winning chance in a weak maiden.
Has the best recent form in the race, closing hard for fourth in a stronger three-year-old event on a soft surface. The speed map shows plenty of early pressure, which should suit a horse that finishes strongly, and he has already placed at Northam. Stepping up to 1300m for the first time is the query and he can get a long way back, but he is a genuine contender.
Consistent four-year-old who has finished second twice in stronger maidens, including a close second over this trip where he led and was only reeled in late. Second-up today and fitter, he should be in the finish if he can overcome a wide gate.
She draws kindly in gate four, is second-up and suited by the likely strong tempo.

Debortoli Family Winemakers Hcp (C1)
Maps ideally from the inside gate to race handy in a contest where Northam clearly favours on-pace runners, and she brings the pick of the track-and-trip form after a narrow second here over 1400m last start. A proven soft-ground winner who is fit and consistent for a stable with a good local record. The one to beat if she reproduces her latest.
Gets the state's premier rider and a good inside gate, and his close fourth over 1400m in this grade two starts back reads well for today. Returns to his best trip after a flat run further out. The only query is a first try on soft ground, but the map and the jockey booking give him a strong each-way claim.
But she does her best work from off the pace, and Northam strongly favours runners closer to the speed, so she will need luck from back in the field.

Procon Developments (Aust) Northam Cup – Sunday 25 October Hcp (C3)
Comes here off a narrow second, the strongest recent form in this field, and he has already won at this course over the mile. The concern is his record on rain-affected ground, where he has been placed but never won from a lot of tries, and he does his best work from well back. If they roll along he can pick them up late; if it is tactical he may have too much to do.
The worry is the sharp rise from maiden company into a Class 3 and a map that leaves him last early from a wide gate, exactly the profile Northam has punished recently. He can win, but he is short enough in a race where the closers have struggled.
Rates the one to beat on the strength of his last-start third, where he charged home under a big weight to be beaten under a length. He has won twice at the mile and draws ideally in barrier two, a plus with Northam rewarding horses settling near the speed. The knock is a modest wet-track record and a quiet stable, but his form reads best here.
He is the likely leader and races well at Northam, with a win and two seconds from six here and two seconds at this exact trip. The worry is a poor last-start fade on soft ground and a jockey in a lean patch, so he appeals more each-way than as a banker.

Morris Pest And Weed Control Hcp (C5)
Rates the one to beat. He was beaten a whisker over 1400m here last start in similar grade, the strongest recent run in the field, after settling just off the pace. He has won at this track and trip, handles soft going, and races handily which suits a moderate tempo. Top weight and a wide draw are the knocks, but his class and track form outweigh them.
A consistent galloper who saves his best for soft ground with two wins from five. The worry is his sit-back style, having settled near last at his past two, and Northam rewards horses closer to the pace. Keep him handy and he is a genuine threat.
Suits this track and condition. He has won three from nine on soft going, including one here, and he lands the inside gate which is a real plus at Northam. His last-start third at Belmont was a solid effort.
She won over this track and trip on a soft track earlier in the year and will roll forward from a middle gate, which is exactly the profile Northam favours. Her recent form reads badly, but her best is good enough at this grade and the each-way return makes her the value in an open race.
