The clear form pick. On debut at Pakenham he was dragged back from a wide gate, went widest on the turn and motored home to be beaten half a length, with the rest well spaced. The knock is barrier 13 at Sale, a track that rewards being handy, so he needs a smooth trip and a genuine tempo up front.

Ladbrokes Switch Mdn Plate
The most reliable of the exposed horses. He led at Moe, kicked two lengths clear and was only run down very late by a smart first-starter, with a big break to third. Two starts back he was caught three deep without cover throughout and still boxed on honestly. From gate eight he should find the front again at a moderate tempo and prove hard to run down.
An improving three-year-old with two starts for two placings. He was last on the turn at Mornington and kept coming, then found the line solidly over 1200m at Pakenham. Gate two is a genuine plus at Sale, where leaders and handy horses hold the edge, and he should settle much closer than he has in either run to date. A gear change suggests the stable is looking for sharpening.
Honest without winning, placed in three of five. He was held up for a long way over this trip at Sale two starts back and stuck on well, then ran third at Bendigo after sitting outside the leader. Blinkers go on first time, Michael Dee takes the ride and the Hayes yard knows how to win here.

Grassdale Estate Mdn Plate
The most reliable horse in the race and the one best placed by the map. He jumps, crosses and controls a moderate tempo in a race where the only other speed is drawn wide, and at Sale horses settling in the first few have a clear edge. He has been beaten late before, but his recent Geelong second and his solid form over this trip are the strongest bankable form here.
The horse with the most raw ability in the race. Her Caulfield Heath effort, sitting outside the leader and going down by a head, is the best piece of form on offer, and she has since won a jumpout. The risks are the freshen-up and the step to 1400m first time, plus a stable and rider combination that has been quiet of late. She maps ideally though and should be in the finish.
His fresh second at Seymour was honest, closing hard from near last, and he should be better again second-up from a soft draw. But he has been beaten in both tries at 1400m and his form tapered sharply at the end of his last campaign.
Castelli In Aria is the wet-track specialist of the field, having placed in all three soft-track starts and also on heavy ground. Her last-start second at Bairnsdale was full of merit after racing wide without cover. She has the early speed to cross from barrier 15 and settle on-pace, but a fast tempo could expose her.
Second-up over 1400m is the right move and he keeps the blinkers.

Kustom Steel Fabrication Mdn Plate
He settled third on debut at Cranbourne and fought on for a close third, running to a standard good enough to win most maidens. The step to 1400m suits on pedigree and he maps to be handy again.
Produced the eye-catching run of the race on debut, charging from near last to miss by a nose over 1300m. That effort was the strongest in this field and the rise to 1400m is ideal. The concern is the map: Sale heavily favours horses settled handy and he is predicted to get back in a moderate-tempo race.
An honest on-pace filly who has been around three lengths from the winner in both starts. She draws ideally in barrier three and should settle in the first few, which is exactly where you want to be at Sale. Third-up, there is scope for natural improvement, but she needs to find a length or two to be winning.
The likely leader from a good gate and a stable that knows how to place them. His debut at Geelong had merit: he led, was hard ridden, and was held up late, finishing within a couple of lengths after doing plenty wrong. The query is whether he truly gets 1400m, but the map gives him a genuine chance.

Ladbrokes Mega Multi (Bm66)
The class runner of the field. He won a hot 1600m event and ran second in a stronger race over further, and last start produced the eye-catcher of the meeting, storming home from last to be beaten under half a length. Second-up and out to his best trip, he has the quality to overcome a get-back style and top weight. The main risk is that coming from the tail is tough over this mile at Sale.
An improving Waller filly who won with authority last time after racing wide the trip. She gets in with just 54kg, 6.5kg below the topweight, and draws to sit handy from an inside gate, which suits this track. The query is the sharp rise from a maiden to this grade and the first try at a mile, but the stable is flying and she is clearly on the up.
A lightly raced four-year-old, he was a game second at this grade last start after being held up at a vital stage, and he is drawn to settle handy in a race that suits on-pace runners. There is upside with only six starts behind him. The concern is the first attempt at 1600m and a stable searching for a winner, but his claims are clear.
She is an on-pace mare who maps to sit right on the speed, which is exactly where you want to be at Sale, and she has already won here and is at her best on good ground. She was a solid third last start in this sort of company. The wide gate is the obvious knock, but her early speed can offset it.

Fantasy Cocktails (Bm66)
The most talented stayer in the line-up. Her third at Flemington over 2500m and a closing third at Geelong over 2400m are the strongest staying efforts on offer, and her latest fifth at Seymour was a genuinely good run after sitting three-wide without cover throughout. With only 55kg after the claim and a midfield map she should get the right run, and she is the clear top pick despite the awkward draw.
Has an excellent record at this track, winning over this trip at Sale and going down by a whisker in another. Cut in the ground suits. The main risk is tackling 2200m first-up from a slightly awkward gate.
The class runner. He has been competitive at 2400-3000m in town, including a close second at Sandown over 3000m and sound efforts over 2400m at Caulfield, and now drops back to this grade. Two runs back from a spell mean he is fit. The knock is the top weight of 62kg and the fact he settles near the tail in a race that may be run at a modest tempo, so he will need the leaders to go quickly.
Racing in the best form of his career with two wins and three placings from his last five, including a last-start second in an open handicap and a strong third at Mornington over 2000m. He has won twice at Sale and has form on rain-affected ground, which is expected later in the card.

Irwin Stockfeeds (Bm66)
Fehmarn is the one to beat. He won at Cranbourne last time over the same trip, settling handy and proving too strong, and his record over 1000m is excellent. From barrier five he should lob into a perfect stalking position behind the leader. The track pattern favours runners in the first few, and he handles both firm and rain-affected ground.
Hotspur Reale has been a model of consistency, placing repeatedly around this grade, and he was unlucky not to finish closer at Ballarat last time when held up. He is second-up today, drawn to sit just off what should be a moderate tempo, and he has previous placed form at Sale.
Hello Romeo is the likely leader and that is a significant advantage at Sale, especially with a moderate tempo predicted. He drops from stronger company and has a good fresh record, with two recent jumpouts to have him fit. The concern is his record on good ground and the 155-day break, but if he gets his own way in front he could prove hard to catch. He is a worthy third pick.
Nordic Strike should lead from barrier 12 and the moderate tempo suits. He is a consistent place-getter and has twice been placed at Sale, including on wet ground. The knock is that he has had seven tries at 1000m without a win, and he was well beaten last start.
Mr Tickles is an each-way overlay at 21 dollars. He won well last start at Bairnsdale and has a strong record over sprint trips, with plenty of soft-track form. From barrier three he should settle in the first few, which is exactly where you want to be at Sale, and the apprentice claim helps.

Ladbrokes Sale Cup
The class runner of the field. With the only genuine speed drawn wide and a slow tempo expected, he settles in the first three without spending a penny. His best form is with cut in the ground and the track is forecast to soften through the day.
One of the most reliable mile handicappers here - 16 placings from 25 starts, a course-and-distance win at Sale and four wins at 1600. He was asked to carry 61.5kg over 1800 last start and was one-paced; back to his right trip with 54kg he maps to sit second behind the leader.
The lone leader in a race that shapes slowly run, which is a big edge given how hard it is to make ground at Sale over a mile. The counter is stark: no win in 29 tries on top of the ground, and this is his third run in 16 days. Place claims outweigh win claims.
He ran second in a Listed mile at Flemington last prep and held his own in stronger handicaps afterwards. He has been freshened with a jumpout, drops out of tougher company, and holds the best record on good ground of anyone in the race.

Turnbull Toyota (Bm70)
Wetumpka appeals as the most complete form candidate. He is unbeaten at Sale, including a 1400m win, and was a close third in a Bm70 at Seymour last start after doing work. He can settle in the first half from barrier 11 and Ben Allen knows him well. The main query is the wide-ish gate and whether he peaks third-up, but his track affinity and tactical speed make him the one to beat.
Hedjet is the likely front-runner and comes off an easy maiden win where he controlled the race. Sale's profile favours leaders, and a moderate tempo could suit him. The obvious concern is the steep jump from maiden company to a competitive Bm70, plus his only Good-track run was unplaced. He is improving and maps well, but this is a test of class.
Bel Mezyaan is the class runner, a Listed-placed four-year-old dropping to Bm70. He has placed in six of seven starts and won a recent trial, but he resumes after a 141-day break and is likely to get back in a race where Sale strongly favours on-pace runners.
Flying Mikki is a genuine value runner. He has won at Sale and placed at 1400m, and Billy Egan is riding well. Barrier 17 is a concern, but he settles back anyway and should be running on.

Ladbrokes Place Extra (Bm70)
The most reliable horse in the race, placed in 13 of 16 starts and rarely runs a bad one. His last-start second at Seymour was the pick of the form in this field, coming from last on the turn to be beaten a nose in a harder race. He handles give in the ground, gets 1200m well and Ben Allen rides this track strongly. The wide gate is the main query, but sprint starts at Sale are fair across the draw.
A Sale specialist with a win and a second from two starts here, including a strong win over this trip on soft ground. His effort here last month over further was the pick of his recent form and he maps to race handy from gate six with a top jockey aboard.
The query is the map: he gets back and this track has been harsh on horses spotting the leaders a start, plus he hasn't raced since May and can race greenly under pressure.
A wet-track mare who gets conditions to suit if the forecast rain arrives before this late race. She has been placed at her last two starts over shorter trips while carrying big weights and has won at this level before. She'll settle midfield and run on late.
