Blazing Future is the one to beat. He was beaten a nose here over 1400m on soft last start after over-racing in the lead, and his two runs before that were solid in this grade. He has the early speed to work across from the wide gate and has been placed twice at this track. The mile and barrier 10 are the queries, but his form clearly stands out in a thin maiden.

Nobel Peace was an eye-catching fourth on debut here over 1400m on soft, charging from last after being held up on the turn. He now steps to the mile second-up for a stable and jockey partnership that wins regularly together. The concern is his get-back style in a race that shapes as slowly run, but he has plenty of improvement in him.
Auzangate went within a head of breaking through here over this trip on soft last start, and he did it the hard way, racing wide without cover throughout. That was his best run yet and he is lightly raced with room to improve. The knock is a stable searching for a winner this prep, but from a good draw he should get a soft run and is a genuine top-three chance.
Royal Edition is the value runner. A slow tempo and a track that rewards on-pace horses gives him a chance to dictate.

The drop into a maiden suits, and the on-pace edge at Townsville is a real help on the wet track.
On pure ability this filly has run to a very high standard for a maiden, including her second over this trip at Townsville. She has placed on Soft and has a top jockey aboard. The wide barrier and a long winless run hold her back, and the stable is in cold form. She should be right in the finish, but she is a place-leaning chance in a race where the on-pace runners have the edge.
Foxy Cheval has run to a good standard over 1200m, including a Townsville third, and the good barrier helps. She is a solid and consistent type, but she has never won and her Soft ground form is thin. The jockey-trainer combination is a positive.
He ran a strong second at Townsville on Soft last start, and he is the other horse that can hold a handy position from a good barrier. He is on-pace in a race that lacks a clear leader, which is a real edge at this track. The finish has been a weakness and the jockey is cold.

On form she is the most reliable and best-credentialed runner in a weak maiden. She should settle just behind the leader from a good draw, which suits the track's forward lean.
She has real early speed and her wet-track runs two years ago were strong, and the map suits a horse that can sit handy. The big concern is the 852-day absence and a fitness unknown, so she is not a confident top pick.
A genuine maiden who has been close on Soft tracks and would be a bigger chance without a heavy weight and an outside barrier. He can use his early speed to find a handy spot and he is capable of running into a place. The stable's poor Townsville record and the weight keep him just behind the better-drawn rivals.
As the clear leader from barrier 3 she should control a moderate-paced race and can't be left alone on this track. She has a habit of weakening late, and the first-up run is a question mark, but 1000m suits her better than her longer attempts. She is a fair each-way chance.

Bairuku won its Townsville trial on Soft 5 in a strong time and gets the same rider back. Maiden fields are volatile, so the stake is measured.
So Sunny improved a lot to finish a close second to Bairuku on Soft 5, and now gets a good gate and a jockey who wins at Townsville.
It needs to handle the wet, which is an unknown, so the stake is small.

Ray White Geaney Kirkwood (Bm70)
The best all-round form profile in the race. It is a recent winner at this grade, has proven soft-track and 1400m credentials, and has the leading stable and jockey behind it. It can sit just behind the likely lone leader in a slowly-run race and has the class to finish off.
Likely to dominate the lead in a slow tempo, and was a winner at the track last start. It is a respected danger and gets the favourable track pattern. It has been unreliable in the wet and has had a quick back-up, so it rates behind the more soft-proven Rock The Sunrise.
A consistent wet-track performer who should enjoy the light weight and soft ground. It is not an ideal fit for a slow tempo as it will likely settle off the speed, and it has no local form, but it can pick up its game second-up.
The concern is the run shape, as it will be back in a slowly-run race on a track that favours forward runners. Each-way cover is sensible.

The one to beat. He led all the way over this trip here on soft ground three weeks ago and then ran a brave fourth last start after missing the start and being held up at a crucial stage. He gets in on the minimum weight, maps to go forward from gate eight and his recent form at this level is the strongest in the field.
A Townsville specialist with a superb overall and first-up record. He has won three of five fresh, trialled sweetly on soft ground here a fortnight ago, and a 3kg claim brings him back to a winnable weight. Suited by the on-pace profile but needs to settle in the first couple.
But he resumes after a long break, carries considerably more weight than for either of those wins, and does his best work off the speed on a track where getting back is a serious handicap. Place hope at best today.
Overpriced on his wet-track record and his draw. He has three wins and three seconds from nine on soft ground, won over this trip at Townsville three weeks ago from midfield, and lands in barrier one which is where this track wants you.

Mick Harris 50th (Bm65)
The race maps perfectly for him: he is the only genuine leader and the tempo looks slow, which is exactly the set-up on-pace horses want at Townsville over the mile on soft ground. He has led and been beaten under a length at his last three tries over this trip, including a win here in August and a placing on a soft mile. The knock is his modest winning strike rate, but with an uncontested lead he is the one they have to run down.
A tough, in-form mare who has found a purple patch, winning at Bowen two starts back after racing wide and then finishing a close second over this trip here on soft ground. She maps to sit just off the lone leader from a good gate, which is the right spot on a track that rewards forward runners over the mile. Her one flop in this grade here in August is the concern, but her recent form is much stronger than that.
But he has had plenty of chances without winning at this level, has never scored beyond 1400m, and has drawn out where mile winners here on soft ground are rare.
A genuine track specialist who has won four of six here and two of three over this exact trip, with a strong soft-ground record as well. She draws well, should hold a handy spot in a race that lacks tempo, and drops slightly in class off a couple of sound placings in stronger grade.

Comes out of a stronger sprint and drops to a winnable grade, and his last run here over this trip was a close-up third after getting clear late. Gate three should see him travel handier than most and the top local rider-trainer link is a plus.
Her recent runs at this track and trip have been close and to a strong standard, and she gets weight relief back in this grade.
A quality mare for this grade with a smart record here over the 1200m, and she was close up last start over this trip after working into it. She drops in class and has a jockey who knows her well. The big issue is the wide draw, which history shows is hard to overcome at Townsville, so she may need to settle further back than ideal and rely on luck in running.
Everything about the map says she gets an easy lead from gate five in a race lacking natural speed, and front-runners have a clear edge here. She won two starts back over this trip and is proven on rain-affected ground.

The most likely winner on form. Settling near the back is a concern on a soft track that favours runners up on the pace, and it has not won on soft ground.
A handy runner that should lead in a moderate-tempo race, which the track favours. Its recent soft-track runs at Townsville have been solid, and it sits in a good weight position. It looks capable of controlling the race and hanging on.
Its recent efforts in good company at Cairns suggest it is better than a Class 5 here. It should be handy on the pace, has handled wet tracks and drops in grade.
It is improving and has won twice on heavy ground, though its soft-track record is poor. Top weight and a cold jockey are concerns, but a handy position at the inside rail makes this horse worth a small saver.
