He has genuine early speed from an inside gate and should settle in the first four, which is exactly where Happy Valley sprints are won.

The main queries are the 2.5kg weight rise and a winless record at Happy Valley, and he needs to be closer than 7th at the 400m to feature.
He drops to 54kg, and his early speed should get him forward into the first three despite the wide draw.

Mighty Steed is the most reliable form horse in the race on this course and distance, finishing 2nd in three of his last four Happy Valley 1650m runs with 61kg and Purton aboard. The speed map has him leading or sitting outside the leader from gate 4, exactly the position that wins at Happy Valley. The low career win rate and the plain Sha Tin run last time are genuine concerns, but the trial since and a return to his preferred track and rider make him the most likely winner.
He is not selected on top because he is still winless after nine starts, his rider is out of form, and his settling position depends on Badel being positive from the gate.
Firefoot has the second-best map in the race from barrier 1 and comes in fresh off a trial win. His recent runs at 1800m have been honest, including a wide-run 2nd at Sha Tin and a leading 5th at Happy Valley, and the drop back to 1650m with 55.5kg should sharpen him.
Decision Link is the value in the race. Two runs ago he won at this track and distance sitting third throughout, and his failure last time came on dirt over 1400m after a poor start and a wide run.

Macanese Master is the form runner best suited to Happy Valley's on-pace lean. He has been beaten narrowly in most of his recent Class 5 starts, has winning form at this track and draws inside to lead or sit outside the leader. Fast-tempo risk from Thousand Cups is real, but he has repeatedly held on when pressed.
Happy Valley's short 310m straight and the strong on-pace bias make a backmarking topweight hard to trust, and his last run at this track from a similar position produced only 7th.
The trial suggests he can settle closer than usual, which is the key to converting.

Sky Deep sat second and was beaten only half a length by Shamz here over 1650m last start, racing keen and getting crowded at the 600m. Today he gets a 2.5kg swing on that horse, draws barrier 1 and should sit outside or just behind The Lion King, exactly the position that wins at Happy Valley. Still the most likely winner.
Five runs at Happy Valley 1650m have produced a win, a second, a fourth and a fifth, so the horse is proven on this tight circuit and pushes forward from wide draws.
Shamz proved he can win here from the back, coming from 10th to beat Sky Deep by half a length last start with 59kg. Two kilos more and a backmarker map on a circuit that punishes horses giving away start are the reasons he sits third rather than first.
Romantic Laos is the classic Happy Valley overlay. He has raced 31 times over this track and distance for 13 top-three finishes, was beaten half a length here last start over 1800m, and drops 2kg to 56kg.

He is fit from two trial wins and drops to 56.5kg.
He races handy, draws barrier 4 and his latest trial was noticeably sharper than the one before it.
His May win here came from 9th at the 400m when the race fell apart, and last time from a wide gate he was fifth behind Definitive. Teetan's form is stone cold.
Definitive is the clear value runner. The negatives are real: top weight, barrier 10, a poor second-up record and a rider without Valley success.

Form says he is the horse to beat. Barrier 3 helps offset his backmarker profile and the projected fast tempo is exactly what he wants.
He is honest, well drawn and will be in the first three at the 400m, but he has been run down late in every start, now carries 60kg, and a fast tempo with multiple speed horses works against him.
The best mapped runner in the race.

Purton from barrier 2 should have him closer than the pace map suggests, with a fast tempo set up by Leading Dragon, Bits Superstar and Good Luck Happy. He is the most likely winner, though the weight and backmarking risk cap confidence.
Leading Dragon is the most credentialled on-pace runner in a race where leaders have a strong historical edge. His Sha Tin win came leading and he carries a light weight after the claim. The concern is a fast tempo with two other speed horses drawn either side, plus the untried combination of a first Happy Valley run with an apprentice new to the track.
Barrier 4 and 53.5kg are ideal on paper, but his run style means he still gives away ground on a circuit that punishes backmarkers. The 57-day gap without a trial and a cold jockey temper enthusiasm.
Bits Superstar has run second four times at this track and distance and was placed twice in February behind quality Class 4 winners. He drops to 51.5kg, draws barrier 5 and will race in the first three, which is the position that wins most often at Happy Valley.

Tycoon Resources is the form horse when his last-start failure is excluded, and stewards attributed that run to an irregular heart rate. Before it he had won three from three at Happy Valley, including this exact race in June beating Motor, Aurio and Storming Dragon. The on-pace map from gate 7 aligns with the track's strong leader and handy bias, and the subsequent trial win indicates he is back to normal. The weight rise is the main query, but his class and upside justify win favouritism over Motor.
The concerns are the 60.5kg impost and barrier 9, which will likely leave him midfield, a zone that wins just 7% of the time here. He finished behind Tycoon Resources at level terms in June and now meets him worse at the weights. Rates a solid place chance rather than the most likely winner.
The fast tempo and light weight are in his favour, and he trialled positively last week. He does need luck from the back on a circuit that heavily favours forward runners, and his winning record is thin. Clear place chance with upside if the leaders collapse.
He won this race last start from the front and meets today's race 2.5kg lighter after a trial win.
