Lightly raced filly with two closing thirds, the latest a one-length defeat at Ballarat over 1500m after being forced wide on the turn. She has finished off strongly both times and the rise to a mile suits a staying-bred type.

The Valley @ Southside Pakenham Mdn Plate
Promising gelding who ran into third on debut after blowing the start, running home better than anything else in this line-up. The step to 1600m on a staying sire's profile looks ideal and the stable knows how to place one. The worry is a soft tempo: he settles at the tail and may simply be left too much to do.
Second-up filly who draws kindly and should be able to hold a forward position in a race with no obvious tempo enforcer. That tactical speed is worth something on a night meeting at Pakenham. However she was well beaten at Cranbourne last time and her best effort so far falls short of the top two. One for the multiples and exotics rather than a serious win play.
The established leader in a race where nothing else wants the front, which is a real advantage on a slow tempo. His most recent run had merit, going down by a length and a half after doing the work over 1500m.

She's by a sire who won at the highest level over this trip, so 1400m first-up shouldn't worry her.
Drops from open juvenile company to a maiden and her run at Caulfield Heath two starts back, beaten a length on a soft track after getting a long way back, is the strongest piece of form in this race. She won a jumpout at Pakenham only ten days ago and gets in on the minimum with a claim.
Made up good ground from last on debut over 1000m at Cranbourne and looks the type to appreciate the step to 1400m, being by a stallion whose stock get further. Drawn to get a soft run just off the speed.
A maiden after five starts, but her two best runs have both come on soft ground, including a narrow second over this trip at Wangaratta where she fought on strongly. She had a good run at Kyneton last start and was simply no match late, but the first-time visors and a gear change may sharpen her.

Wyandra is the most exposed and most consistent runner here: 11 starts for seven seconds, including four placings from five on soft ground and a last-start half-length defeat on a Soft 5 when he led and fought on. He lands in the box seat from gate six, should control a moderate tempo at a night meeting, and drops back to 1000m which suits his style.
Celestial Blue was beaten a whisker at Geelong on heavy ground after doing plenty of work wide, and that performance rates clearly the strongest piece of form in the race. He has trialled twice at Pakenham since, including a soft-track hit-out, and from gate four he will be handy in a race without a dominant leader. The queries are the four-month break and a stable that has been quiet recently, but his upside is obvious and he is the one they have to beat.
Frandema is the pick of the first starters. She won both her Pakenham jump-outs, the latest on a soft surface in good time, and the booking of Blake Shinn for a debutante from a stable that has been finding the winner's stall is a strong pointer. The concerns are the three gear changes first time, which hint at a horse who has been doing things wrong, and a slightly awkward draw. On what we have seen she is the one most likely to upset the older maidens.
Capital Charlie was snagged back from a wide gate on debut and still ran on well to be beaten five lengths over 1000m at Cranbourne, a run that stacks up as a placing effort for this grade. He meets a similar field, strips fitter and has Craig Newitt sticking with him. The obvious problem is gate 11, which means he will be last again on a night where leaders are favoured.

Chef's Hat Mdn Plate
The form horse of the race. Placed in four of five, including all three on rain-affected ground, and his last-start second at Seymour over 1200m was the best run produced by anything in this field. He was beaten only half a length here over this trip on a soft track as a two-year-old, so the conditions hold no fears. He does get back and needs a solid tempo, but Pakenham's long straight is forgiving and he is clearly the one to beat.
A debut nose second at Geelong reads well for a maiden and he was still running about and hanging out when the pressure came on. Second-up he should be sharper and more tractable, and the map says he lands in the first few in a race lacking genuine speed. First look at a wet track is the query, but his natural gate speed gives him first use of the conditions. Clear second pick.
Gelded since his first campaign and much better second-up, he was badly held up at Moe last start and still got to the line well for fourth. He trialled nicely on a soft surface at this track and from gate two should be able to hold a forward spot in a race where the lead looks up for grabs. The class is there, he just needs the gaps to come at the right time.
Both his runs have had genuine excuses, and last time at Cranbourne he was shuffled to last, held up, then hit the line strongly for fourth. He gets weight relief, a much better draw and a track that rewards a sustained run from the back.

Congratulations Cosmic Crusader (Bm62)
Won first-up at a higher grade, leading throughout on soft ground, and now drops to a winnable BM62 with conditions to suit. She is the likely leader in a moderate tempo, which is a big plus at a night meeting. The knock is her blank second-up record and a wide draw that may force early work, but her class and wet-track form make her the one to beat.
The concern is the jump in grade against hardened older mares from a wide barrier, and her one soft-track run saw her lead and get run down.
The most reliable wet-tracker in the field, she won at this level on soft ground and has repeatedly placed in stronger company on rain-affected tracks. Her last-start second on soft reads well and she should settle handy from a good gate.
Well beaten last time, but that was in a far stronger race and she now drops sharply to a winnable BM62. She won first-up this preparation on soft ground at this trip and comes from a top stable with a strong rider booking.

Kia Ora Stud (Bm62)
Lightly raced mare with the best class profile in the race. She won her only Pakenham start over this trip, has a strong partnership with Damian Lane and drops from a stronger grade after a first-up run where she led and was swamped. A recent trial win suggests she is ready second-up. The soft track is an unknown, but her class, tactical speed and upside make her the one to beat.
Comes off an impressive first-up win at Ballarat where he settled off the pace, overcame interference and quickened strongly. The 2kg claim helps at this grade and a fast tempo should suit his midfield style. He has been placed in this class before. The main queries are his second-up record and wet-track form, but he is clearly one of the leading chances.
Veteran sprinter who has been in great form with three close placings. He gets back and runs on, and the predicted fast tempo should suit his pattern. He has a solid wet-track record and a strong rider. The concern is his low winning strike and inside draw, but he is a reliable top-three hope.
Talented three-year-old who drops sharply in class after competing in stronger two-year-old company. He has a win and a placing on soft ground and has trialled well for this return.

Ranvet (Bm62)
Last-start winner at Kyneton on soft, settling midfield and finishing powerfully to score at a level just below this. Lightly raced with two wins from three and clearly improving for a leading stable. The wide gate is manageable at a forgiving track.
Consistent mare who has finished close up over the mile at her last two, both from the front. She is fit, gets in light at 58kg, and has won twice on soft. Her on-pace style should be favoured by a moderate tempo on a Friday night, when the track can play to those up front.
Track-and-distance specialist who has been placed four times at Pakenham over the mile, including in stronger races. Drops to a winnable grade with a senior rider up. The knock is a poor record on genuinely soft going and two modest recent runs, so he profiles as a place chance rather than a confident win pick.
She knows Pakenham well with 20 starts here, handles soft ground and is well drawn.

Ladbrokes More On Tote Win (Bm62)
The one to beat on form. Two from two at Pakenham over 1400m, including a runaway win on soft and another on heavy, so today's surface is ideal. He's building nicely third-up after running on over shorter trips on firm ground and gets the right trip now. Stackhouse, who has won on him twice from three rides, takes the mount from a handy gate. The clock says his best here is the strongest in the race.
A lightly raced Waller four-year-old whose standout run was a fast-finishing second over this course and trip. Two closing sixth placings this prep suggest he's ready to peak, though he gets back and needs an honest tempo, and he's had just one soft-track start.
Last-start winner over 1400m on soft gives him a strong platform; he also won here over the trip. Handles night racing and can settle handy from a good gate. Top weight is offset by a three-kilo claim. Well held on firm ground last time but that doesn't reflect his wet-track ability.
A mudlark who saves his best for wet ground and this track — two wins and a placing from five starts here including over this trip on heavy. Recent form has excuses, notably a heart complaint two starts back, and he was a solid second on soft three runs ago.
