The class runner of the field, dropping out of open handicap company after a win last start and a placing at this level before that. Her stable and jockey are both in form and have a strong record together. The knocks are that her best work has come on heavy ground and she is untested at 2200m, so she is short enough, but she still looks the one to beat.

Vernon & Vazey Truck Parts (Bm75)
She brings the best recent form of any runner, is a proven soft-track winner and handled this sort of trip with a solid effort last start. The concern is the riding change to a jockey going through a quiet patch, plus an inside draw that has historically been the worst part of the Ashburton track. On form alone she is right in the finish.
A consistent type who has placed at this course and is well suited by 2200m. He is the likely leader in a race predicted to be run at a slow tempo, which should let him control the gallop and give a good sight. The knock is that he has never won on soft going and is still chasing a first win at Ashburton, so he looks more a place than a win proposition.
He drops a long way in class out of open handicap company and brings a strong record over this trip, plus he has produced some of his best efforts against far better horses. The negatives are his age and top weight on a soft track where he has rarely won, and his trainer is in a quiet patch.

He ran to a winning standard on wet ground two starts back before a plain last-start effort where he was used up early. The slow tempo and inside gate should suit him if he settles. Clear top pick.
Kirchmeyer is the emerging type. Lightly raced, he produced the field's best recent display when closing hard into fifth last week and has the stable and jockey combination to keep progressing. The queries are the step up to 1400m and a four-day turnaround. On an upward curve, he is a genuine threat.
Go Pro comes off the best single run in the field, a surging second on wet ground over further. His staying profile and wet-track form make him interesting, though he drops to 1400m where he is yet to place and may need the race run to suit.
Queen Courtney is a value hope.

Scenic Hotel Group Mdn
A lightly raced mare clearly on the improve, running a close second in a comparable maiden on soft ground last start. From a wide draw she can settle just off a slowly-run tempo and be finishing hard.
The class runner of the field, having mixed it in black-type company as a three-year-old before a solid first-up fourth at 1400m. Her recent form is the strongest in this race and she drops to a maiden she should be competitive in, and she should be fitter second-up. The obvious knock is a long run of defeats without a placing, and a slowly-run race may not flatter a one-paced type.
She is lightly raced, gets in well on the three-year-old allowance, and looks likely to settle handy in a race with almost no early speed, which should suit. The concerns are that she steps up to 1400m for the first time from a sprinting family and is yet to win, with her rider in a lean patch.
A consistent mare who saves her best for rain-affected ground, with placings on both soft and heavy tracks.

Rainer Irrigation (Bm65)
The most reliable mare in the field over this trip, with three wins and five placings from 14 starts at 1400m. Drawn to lead and, with only one genuine front-runner engaged, she should control a moderate tempo. She has already run second over this course and distance on rain-affected ground and gets a top local jockey.
A wet-track specialist who has won or placed in half of his eight starts on soft going, and he is proven at this trip. He doesn't need to lead, so a moderate tempo and a wide gate (no disadvantage here) should suit. His latest run was competitive at this level without winning. The main query is that he has found one better in most of his recent starts.
One of the better recent runs in the field and a horse that saves his best for 1400m, having placed in four of five attempts. He is lightly raced for a five-year-old and tends to race handy, which fits a moderate-tempo contest. The concern is that he has done most of his racing in maidens, is yet to win on a wet track, and the stable is quiet.
The pick of the field on recent form lines, including a placing in a black-type race, and still lightly raced and improving. She settled handy in her best runs and the 1400m should be within range fresh. The risks are a first-up run with no fresh form to go on and an unknown rider.

GD Jones Salute Hcp
Genuinely open sprint, but Iron Hawk brings the best recent form. He won at this trip last start in open company and his three wins from five at 1200m top the field. The worries are top weight and a likely hot tempo, but he has shown he can settle off the speed and finish hard. The one to beat.
Consistent open-company campaigner who closes hard and looks well served by the likely strong early tempo, which should set it up for the backmarkers. He was placed in this grade at his last two and ran second at this course in the autumn. From a top stable and drawn nicely. Hard to leave out.
Genuine mare with a fine record at the trip — four wins and six seconds from twelve starts — and a habit of hitting the frame. She won two of her last four and is second-up, a scenario she handles well. The risks are a notable rise in grade and a wide draw, though the rail holds no edge at this track.
Value play. He has won at this course and distance and is a far better horse second-up, with two wins and a placing from four fresh runs. He handles soft ground, gets in light and rarely runs a bad race.

Clem & Russel Brand Memorial (Bm65)
The class runner of the field, dropping back from open grades where he won two starts ago and finished second last time. Proven at 2200m and handles rain-affected going. A genuine win and each-way proposition.
The most consistent mare in the field and arguably the best suited to track and trip. Placed in all five Ashburton starts and in nine of her last ten, with two wins in her last five. Sits handy and stays well. The query is she has never won on turf, so she is more a place than a win proposition, but she should be in the finish.
Course-placed and ran a good third on a soft track two starts back before a forgive run in a heavy slog last time. Fitter now and a genuine place chance, though he has yet to win on grass.
A soft-track specialist with three wins on rain-affected ground, and she drops back into this grade after a string of tougher assignments. Placed at this course and distance before and turned in a competitive effort last start.

McCrea Painters & Decorators Ashburton Cup
Lightly raced five-year-old who has made Ashburton's 1600m his own with two wins, one of them on soft ground, and he has won or placed in his last four. He drops to the lightest weight in the field, a real edge in a competitive Open race, and his handy racing style suits the moderate tempo expected. The only query is the class rise, but a second at Open level last start says he belongs.
Consistent Open handicapper and arguably the best-credentialled horse in the field over this trip. He won a 1600m Open Handicap at Riccarton and has repeatedly run to a high standard in stronger company, finishing strongly from off the pace. The knocks are the hefty 60.5kg, a 7yo frame, and a second-up record without a win. Good each-way value if the race is run to suit his closing style.
Course winner at Ashburton over this trip and runner-up in both of his most recent 1600m starts at Open level. He has a strong second-up profile and is a reliable place-getter. The concern is that he has never won on a soft track in eleven attempts and must carry top weight of 61kg. He settles off the pace and needs the race to unfold in his favour.
Genuine front-runner with a smart record at Ashburton, where he has won twice. He led throughout to take a strong 1600m race at Riccarton, and the trainer-jockey combination is going well. From a wide draw that carries no penalty here, he could control a moderate tempo and prove hard to run down.

Barneswood Farm Stakes
The clear class runner. She won the Listed Canterbury Belle last start on testing ground and was second in a Group 1 over this trip on soft, form the rest of the field simply lacks. Freshened and still improving, she should be too strong. The wide draw is not a concern here and she is the one to beat.
A stakes-winning colt who was a close second last start and is rarely far from the action. The step up to 1400m for the first time and a modest rider booking are the queries, but he is a genuine winning hope.
Broke through with a competitive stakes win on debut on soft going, beating more seasoned types. Lightly raced and open to improvement, she is exactly the progressive, unexposed type the Ashburton winner profile rewards.
Placed in black-type company at two and gets a top rider.

Cochranes Of Canterbury (Bm65)
Dorothea is the form mare of this field, having finished second at Riccarton and third at her previous start, both at this grade and both to a winning standard. The one query is a soft track, where she has yet to place, but at Ashburton current form counts for more than wet-track history, and hers is the strongest here.
Mad Max is the obvious map horse — the only real leader and likely to get a soft, uncontested lead, a genuine plus on a wet Ashburton track where on-pace runners dominate. He was a solid second last start and is consistent at this grade.
Pequot is a reliable type at this grade who was close up in fourth at Riccarton last start, running to a competitive standard. He has placed at this course and distance, draws nicely in ten and gets Hayley Hassman, who is riding Ashburton particularly well. He is more a place than a win proposition given his strike rate, and the soft track is a query, but a top-three finish is well within reach.
Lightly raced, improving four-year-old who is proven on soft ground, with a soft-track maiden win and a soft-track placing to his name. Ran a good second last start and the wetter the better for him. The combination of his rider and trainer has a strong record. Drawn wide and yet to prove himself at 1400m, but he appeals as the best of the rest.
Sacred Dior is the value play. She is a genuine Ashburton specialist with two wins and two placings from ten starts here, including a win over this exact course and distance in April, and she handles soft ground. She draws nicely in eight with Kendra Bakker, who rides this track well, aboard.

Agraforum Growing Innovation (Bm75)
Genuine course-and-distance specialist who is two from two at Ashburton and has twice won on rain-affected going. He was solid first up at Riccarton and now steps back to his best trip, which is a clear plus. Top weight is the main query, but he ticks the profile of the in-form, lightly raced, course-proven type that wins here often.
The most reliable horse in the field, having placed in the large majority of his starts, including every fresh run. He has already won at Ashburton and looks well suited by the give in the ground. The knock is that he is still chasing a first win over this shorter trip and is first up after a lengthy spell, but he should be right there.
A progressive type who relishes rain-affected ground, having won and placed on soft tracks over the winter. His runner-up effort at Ashburton on a wet track was a strong piece of form and he has a fresh win on his record.
She handles soft ground and comes off a solid fourth at this grade, so she is fit and in form. The wide gate is manageable given the track plays fair, and she looks overpriced relative to her genuine place claims.
