She has mixed it in Group 3 and Listed company and now meets a much lower grade, with a light weight. She was awkward at the start last time and still ran fourth. Good ground is the only unknown, but her class edge is clear. The stable's poor recent strike rate is a worry, though runners from it have been placing consistently. Favouritism is deserved here.

Yourride (Bm65)
He is improving, the jockey is outstanding at this track, and he could dictate a moderate pace. The wide barrier and the rise from maiden and Hcp 60 company hold him just behind Perfect Chaos on class.
A lightly raced mare who won well first up and should improve second up. With a strong finishing sprint and a capable rider, she has a good profile.
A long break and the wide gate are issues, but she has won first up before and can get a handy position.

Speight's Mdn
Beaten a length at this track and trip last start after sitting outside the leader - the best recent run in this field. He maps perfectly again from gate seven, with McNab riding in great form and a strong record for the stable. The knocks are 13 starts without a win and no placings on good ground, but the drying surface and his on-pace style give him every opportunity to break through.
A class dropper out of Group 1 and Group 3 company into a maiden, and he has already shown he handles this course and trip on good ground when placed at the top level as a two-year-old. Last start he led here over 1200m and fought on for third, running a win-standard race. He gets in light at 57kg and can dictate. The stable is quiet and the draw is wide, but the ability is obvious.
Placed in three of four starts for the Walker/Bergerson yard, with Bosson taking the ride from the inside gate - a combination that wins regularly here. The concern is the long gap between runs and a flat final outing last preparation, so she may need the outing, but the stable's fresh-up record demands respect.
Raced three wide from a wide gate here last start and still finished off strongly for eighth - a better run than it reads on paper. From gate four he should settle much closer to the speed, and he has a solid 1200m time to his name. Grylls knows this track well.

Skycity Christmas Carnival Mdn
Endless Night has improved at each of his three starts and his last-start fourth at Ellerslie was the strongest finishing effort in this field, running down everything bar three from near the tail. The mile is the query for a colt by a sprinting sire, but a moderately run race from barrier 1 should let him travel closer than usual. Clear top pick in a weak maiden.
Her earlier mile flop came on going she clearly disliked, so a Good 4 today removes that excuse.
Licorice looks the best-placed on-pace runner in a race with no natural leader. She sat second in a strong Ellerslie maiden last start and held third, finishing ahead of Endless Night, and from barrier 3 she can dictate or stalk the speed over a trip that should suit a Savabeel mare.
Superbus is the clock horse of the field. He returns fresh, which is the knock, but he has early speed, draws barrier 2 and could control the race from the front.

Dunstan Horsefeeds (Bm75)
Sweet Ice controlled the race from the front to win this grade at Ellerslie last start, defeating Allaces and Ruach, and earlier ran a creditable fifth in the NZ Derby over today's track and distance on firm ground. A likely moderate tempo lets him sit handy without being pressured.
A genuine 2400m horse with a win over this exact track and distance in September, then an unlucky head second at Te Aroha carrying top weight. He drops a lot of weight today and his last run was one of the stronger efforts in this field. The rise in grade is the question, but he is lightly weighted for the step up and settles where Ellerslie winners come from.
The talent is clear and the jockey booking is a positive. The concern is that today's drying Good surface and a steadily run race, from barrier ten, play against a wet-track backmarker.
Ruach is an honest veteran who filled the minor placing behind Sweet Ice and Allaces last start and finished off faster than either. He gets 2kg off the winner for today, is a proven performer on Good ground and has won twice at Ellerslie. He rarely wins, which is why he is 15-1, but he keeps running into the placings at this grade and the first 2400m attempt is no concern on his staying style. Each-way value against the top three.

Trackside.co.nz 3yo
Spellbound is the most accomplished horse in a field full of lightly raced maiden graduates. With a lone leader expected and a slow tempo, his handy racing style is a real asset at Ellerslie.
Withallmystrength produced the sharpest performance of any runner in this field when he won his maiden at Ellerslie last start, sitting third and running away from his rivals in a time well above the class standard. He is a Churchill gelding who should appreciate the step up to 1400m, and the handy racing pattern fits a slow tempo.
The inside gate and slow tempo are both in his favour.
Belle Rebelle is a classic value runner. She now drops into open 3yo company with 55kg, barrier 3 and Craig Grylls. The get-back style in a potentially slow race and her trainer's poor Ellerslie record are concerns, but she has the ability to beat most of these if the race is run at a genuine clip.

Kingmakers Become A Racehorse Owner (Bm65)
Ocean Rules ran to a winning standard when third here on Good 4 last start, beaten under two lengths while carrying 56kg. Today's going matches, the weight is kind and the tempo looks moderate, so a handy position is realistic.
Savvy Donna has been knocking at the door, finishing a close second last start at Ellerslie and putting in strong late runs over the past few outings. Second up should see her improve again and she has won at the distance.
Jurisprudence ran one of the best races in this field on Good 4 last start, and with an easy lead from barrier 2 in a moderately run mile he can dictate.

Sword Of State - Proven Gr.1 Sire Hcp
Won this grade over 1400m at Ellerslie last time, picking off the leaders from midfield, and she is clearly the best-performed horse at this venue with four wins and a second from five starts. She has won her only start at 1500m and draws gate one, so she should settle closer than usual in a race lacking a genuine front-runner.
Produced arguably the best run in the race last start, charging from last to go down by a neck over 1400m here while giving weight to most of these. He is a three-time winner at Ellerslie and is fully effective on good ground, and the step to 1500m suits. The concern is the map: he gives away a start in a race where horses off the pace rarely win at this venue, and he draws wide again.
A second-up specialist with two wins from four fresh runs, and he gets the leading jockey-trainer combination of the meeting. His fresh-up effort was plain but he was slow away over a trip short of his best, and 1500m on good ground is much more to his liking. He has been competitive in stronger open handicaps.
Dropped out of Group company and was a solid fifth here last start after giving away a big start from a wide alley. Drawn kindly in gate four, he should settle much closer and be finishing over the top of them.

Son Of Sun is the main danger.
El Vencedor is past his peak but this is the race that suits him best. He is almost unbeatable at Ellerslie over 2000m when near his best, he drops from Group 1 to Group 3, and the speed map suggests he can lead at his own tempo, which is how he does his best work.

Horizon By Skycity (Bm65)
Navy Ensign has been running at a winning standard in Bm65 company and rates the most reliable on form. The inside draw and a moderate tempo should let him slot in handy, and his last run at Ellerslie was strong. Top weight is a concern and he's a frequent placer, but his class and trajectory edge the field.
Bethany Dee has been competitive in better grades, including a narrow second at Ellerslie over this trip. The drop to Bm65 is a clear help and the stable is in good form at the track. A wide draw and midfield-to-back run style leave her reliant on the pace, but she is a leading place chance and a genuine winning hope.
Farewell To Eire is the one runner with real gate speed in a race that lacks a clear leader, which matters at Ellerslie where sprint leaders do best. She has Melbourne form in better grades and a top jockey. The risk is a wide gate and a first-up run after a long break, but the map is a strong plus.
Palladium won her debut in a manner that suggests there is more to come, and she gets a good draw and a light weight.

Ready To Run Trainers Series (Bm75)
He is a consistent winner who has won at Ellerslie and is unbeaten on Good ground, including a strong recent victory. He led and stuck on for second last time and should be prominent again. The concern is top weight and a likely contested lead, but his class and track record make him the most probable winner.
Swiss Prince brings clear class to this field after mixing in Group races, including a Group 2 win on Good ground. He is unbeaten on Good tracks and has a win and a placing at Ellerslie. The major query is fitness after a long break and top weight in a race with several possible leaders.
Thumbelina is an improving mare with a lovely inside draw. She was forced wide and settled last first-up, so her finishing position was better than it looks, and she should be much closer from the inside gate. She has won at Ellerslie and gets a top jockey. The step up in trip is a query, but she is a live each-way chance.
General Menari is a progressive four-year-old with a strong winning record and form around this grade. He won multiple recent starts before a break and has won first-up, so fitness may not be an issue. The wide draw is the obvious problem at Ellerslie, where sprint backmarkers struggle, but the fast tempo could help him late.
